Like you, our other guests and students come to our retreat to recharge, meditate, practice yoga & mediation, study, find peace and relax. In order to make the most of your stay, we ask that you carefully read our code of conduct with the intention for all guests and students to have the most serene and tranquil experience at Nepal Yoga Academy. We ask that you offer the love and respect you wish in return. We wish you a pleasant stay.

As we yogis are all about respect, so please keep this forefront in your mind, when you consider:

  • Class attendance & timings
  • Noise levels throughout the day but especially before and after sessions in the yoga shala. Some people will be meditating so help keep it a sacred place for focus and concentration.
  • Practice consideration, tolerance & empathy for your peers and guests. We are all here for different reasons and from unique cultures.
  • You are encouraged to attempt cleansing periods of fasting &/or silent (non-communication). We will respect your wishes & support your efforts.
  • Let someone know if you need to miss a class or are ill, so we may assist you. If you suffer from any long-term or chronic injuries or diseases please inform us when making your reservation. During your stay, if you are feeling sick or have any injuries, please notify a member of staff. Our team are here to support you.

Also please, understand:

  • Dress Code: We ask that you be respectful towards Nepali {and yogic culture} by dress appropriately.
  • Quiet time: Mornings are a special time and it is important to start the day right. As not all guests and students wake at the same time, we ask that you be mindful until breakfast time (09:30am). Please do not bang doors and have phone conversations outside the rooms, as some may be sleeping, meditating or reading.
    The afternoons, are for rest &/or learning, therefore we like to remain a respectful & peaceful.
  • Meal time is also quiet time during meal times supports you to fully appreciate your meal, focusing on slow ingestion better digestion. The retreat strives to provide organic and vegetarian/vegan meals but if you have special dietary needs please notify our staff in advance. We will try to accommodate your needs, as best we can.
  • Intoxicants and chemicals: With respect to the surroundings, yourself & our guests, alcohol or other intoxicants nor cigarettes are not allowed on site. We also ask that strong chemicals and aerosols not be used. Try natural alum to replace your chemical deodorant.
  • Personal belongings: Please be responsible for your own belongings, locking doors is good against inquisitive mosquitoes and people.
  • Yoga class attendance: Guests are invited to attend yoga classes, during morning (0715-0930hrs) and evening hours (1700-1830hrs). If you choose not to, please be empathetic to those that do.
  • Massage: Students are welcome to one massage a week; however we ask that you book in advance. If you wish to enjoy extra massages (at additional cost), please notify a representative, who will be happy to arrange it for you.
  • Satsang: We encourage the talented &/or spiritual among you, to create an evening or afternoon of mantra or singing to bring the community closer.
  • Karma yoga: We really appreciate the practice of Karma Yoga in our retreat, any feedback, ideas or input are highly encouraged. We particularly will appreciate you sharing your experience with the world online through social media (Facebook, Trip Advisor, YogaRetreats.com, Yogateachertraining.com or as a blog!).

Please, your appreciation for our facilities:

  • Laundry: Your clothes can be professionally cleaned for you, please ask about the cost & 2-3 day turn around. Alternatively, you can be self-sufficient by hand-washing by the gazebo, next to the kitchen. The staff will provide buckets are provided. Please hang on the lines provided under the car-park shade. We ask that you do NOT wash your clothes in the bathrooms, as they are not designed for such use and can cause damage to our home.
  • Use of Toilets: Throughout Nepal, toilet waste is dealt with via closed systems. Therefore, toilet paper and sanitary items can NOT be flushed! As doing so will block our system. Use the waste baskets & try the bidet shower (bum gun) to wash; they are ecological, healthy and fun!
  • Electricity and water conservation: All systems in Nepal are sensitive, the power will cut but we have limited battery back up power, so please be mindful of light and water usage. If there is a power outage, make sure all switches are turned off before leaving the room.
  • Drinking water: Feel free to refill your water bottle in the dining area. We encourage you to bring a reusable bottle.
  • Spa services: We have a wonderful masseuse who’s services can be included in your package. For additional massage, there is an additional cost. Please speak to our staff for information and reservations.
  • Room cleaning: We provide room cleaning once a week but please feel free to ask for additional.
  • Whatever you need: Extra blankets, toilet paper, candles, mosquito plug-in refills, new towels? or wish to have your room cleaned, please let a member of staff know and we’ll get on it!
  • Damage of retreat property: We know that you will be respectful of the retreat premises, but sometimes accidents happen. Please report any damages. In the worst case, charges may be incurred.
  • Library: We have a small library located in the back room of the yoga shala, we trust you will enjoy and return the books when done. Noting that others may want to use the same text!

Student responsibilities:

  • All students are asked to follow the Yamas & Niyamas (ethics and morals) according to the eight Limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.
  • Training expectations: Be active, be attentive, join all sessions & support both your peers and yourself. Fully utilize the given material, practice non-judgment and compassion for self and others; with hope, develop your practice with passion.
  • Absenteeism: To graduate students must attend 90% of classes. Should any injury or illness be prohibitive, we’ll develop a recovery plan for you.
  • Setting you up for success: Let go of your expectations, try not to compete, be humble and learn from yourself, “remember a teacher exists in everything that you do, in every class you take and in every experience you have while completing the program.

Yoga class conduct:

  • As we yogis are all about respect, so please keep this forefront in your mind, when you consider:
  • Study time: Do use your time wisely, after all, you are your best teacher.
  • Electronic devices: In the interest of others and your own progress, please don’t make calls in the shala. Let’s keep the ether clear and air fresh with less phone time. Such devices can be helpful as silent study aids.

Leisure time & Rest Days (Massages, Hiking, etc):

  • Rest days are determined by the teacher (and are usually every Sunday, but expect changes from time to time).
    Students will receive one rest day per week. During that time you are free to do as you please. Some students take this time to discover the surrounding areas, day tours of Kathmandu, quiet study in peace and harmony at the retreat or simply unwind with a massage; we ask that you respect your fellow students, whether it is to socialize or to meditate. Perhaps we can arrange a group tour for you at a reasonable cost?
  • Accessing the Panchamahalaxmi and other temple: If you go on hikes through the temple, please dress appropriately (shoes off, shoulders and torso covered, clothing to reach below the knees. Obviously, please be respectful to the monks. Temples are sacred places and your positive attitude will be appreciated.
  • Safety and wildlife: Given the jungle surroundings, there are insects, including mosquitoes all year round, please try to use natural repellents such as citronella and lemongrass oil. Please do not use DEET or other strong chemicals. If you go hiking in the countryside or in the jungle, bring water, hat, sunscreen, water proof clothing, and solid shoes for slippery roads.
  • Please let somebody know if you are going on a hike and let them know when you approximately plan to return (for lunch or after etc…).
  • Sicknesses and injuries: If you suffer from any long-term, chronic injuries or repetitive injury or illness, please inform us when making your reservation. We will try to tailor your program to support and heal you. During your stay, if you are feeling sick or have any injuries, please notify a member of staff, as soon as possible, so we may assist you. The representatives of the retreat are here to help you heal and accommodate your needs.
